We are aware that consignments of oyster sauce and abalone sauce are being imported from China.

The countries approved to supply bivalve molluscs (e.g. oysters, scallops, mussels), echinoderms (e.g. sea urchins), tunicates (e.g. sea squirts) and marine gastropods (e.g. abalone) are listed in Annex I of retained regulation 2019/626 https://www.legislation.gov.uk/eur/2019/626/annex/I. China is not listed as an approved country for such products.

This means that, for example:

• Oyster sauce and abalone sauce falling within the definition of a fishery product cannot be imported from China.
• Composite products containing oyster / abalone ingredients cannot be imported from any country if the oyster / abalone content is from China. If you are importing such composite products please ensure you have documentary evidence confirming that the oyster /abalone content is from an approved country.

We will be checking imported food to ensure that the above legal requirements are met.
